Knowsley residents are being urged to become more environmentally aware through the introduction of kerbside paper collections. Every year in Knowsley 50,000 tonnes of waste is collected, which is enough rubbish to fill Anfield or Goodison every two years! In order to capture some of this waste for recycling Knowsley recently carried out trial kerbside collections of paper using bags, boxes and wheeled bins. The results showed that the small wheeled bins were the most productive and environmentally friendly way to collect unwanted papers. Therefore, half the Borough will initially receive blue recycling wheeled bins for their papers, which will be collected every four weeks (each bin comes with a calendar to remind people when it will be collected). Participation in the scheme is voluntary and residents will receive an opt out leaflet, which gives residents the opportunity to make their own arrangements to recycle paper. The new blue wheeled bins will collect newspapers, magazines, white paper, catalogues, junk mail and white phone books. Knowsley Contract Services will then deliver the paper to a nearby mill where it is recycled to manufacture fresh newsprint paper. Other recycling initiatives under consideration in Knowsley include collections for items such as glass bottles, jars, textiles and cans. |
