BT Launches £1 million scheme to connect communities to the web

In October, BT launched a national awards scheme aimed at giving community groups across the UK the chance to connect to the world wide web.

Over the coming twelve months, BT Community Connections will award more than £1 million of internet ready PCs to more than 1,700 individuals or groups who wish to make a positive impact in their community.

There will be three application rounds during the year and any group or individual that can show that the provision of a free internet ready PC will have a positive impact in their community can apply. Each award will consist of a Pentium chip PC, support material and training CD-ROM, suite of suitable software and one year's BT Internet and BT Surftime.

Richard Hamer, project director for BT Community Connections, comments, “By providing 21st century technology to many urban and rural communities across the UK, BT will help these groups to educate others about their work, explore the internet and expand their projects in the future.”

Michael Wills, Minister for Learning and Technology comments, “BT Community Connections complements our drive from within the government to increase the availability and take-up of information and communication technology, particularly for people living in the poorest neighbourhoods.”

The application process for the first round of awards is already underway. Groups or individuals wishing to apply should send their contact name, address, e-mail address if available, along with a 200 word description of how their community project will benefit from the allocation of an award to:

BT Community Connections,
36 King Street,
