Knowsley Disability Concern is a local charity that has been providing support for disabled people in Knowsley since 1977. But with the recent appointment of their new resource manager, Chris Roderick, KDC is hoping to raise its profile and expand its services to residents in Huyton.

The centre itself, situated just off Tarbock Road, provides a warm and friendly environment where people with disabilities can seek advice on a range of issues, as well as providing training, recreation and leisure activities.

Speaking recently to Huyton Today, Chris Roderick said, “We are looking to develop the centre as a source of advice and information that is difficult for people with disabilities to find elsewhere. I hope that part of this would be to link up with Dial UK, a national network for advice.”

Whatever the plans for the future, KDC is already providing much needed support, including links with Knowsley Community College and, more recently, involvement with the Mock Beggar Theatre Company. KDC have been using drama to help with clients’ personal and social skills, and those taking part will have the opportunity to perform as part of a Merseyside-wide drama initiative.

KDC also boasts a very successful ten-pin bowling team - the KDC Strikers. The team meets twice a week and have competed successfully in the Special Olympics.

“We have a wonderful team of volunteers, but we could always use more help,” Chris told us. “I am also looking to make links with other organisations providing similar services to disabled people in the Huyton area.”

If you can help, or want to find out more about the service Knowsley Disability Concern provides, contact Chris on 0151 480 4090, or e-mail him at kdc@onetel.net.uk.
