New building for Malvern Primary School

Following extensive public consultation, Malvern Primary School in Huyton is set to be rebuilt. The new school, the first to be built in Huyton for 20 years, is scheduled to open in 2003 and will replace the “temporary” building constructed in 1952.

Plans for the new building include greater community involvement, opening the school to local people for art, drama, sport, IT and music.

Pupils at the school have been involved in the project from the start. Many have submitted their own ideas.

A public meeting was held at the school in May at which local people were invited to discuss the proposals and express their views on the scheme.

Headteacher Mrs Kinsella told Huyton Today, “We are all very excited about the new school. At the moment we have real problems with leaks, lack of ventilation and poor heating. The building is clearly no longer suitable and its replacement is long overdue. Local people have been very supportive of the scheme, although there is obviously some concern about access to the site by construction traffic.”

Plans are currently being drawn up which will go to public consultation later this summer. Construction is due to start on the site in Spring 2002. The present school buildings will remain open until work is completed.
