Huyton artist Gordon Lavender is hoping to carve a niche for himself as an illustrator of Christmas and birthday cards. Gordon works as a ‘tree surgeon’ for Knowsley Borough Council and his job has brought him face to face with British wildlife, the inspiration for much of his work.

Gordon, whose works are currently exhibited in Huyton Library, taught himself how to paint and has only been painting seriously since 1996.

“I am self taught. I have never been told what to do or what not to do with certain mediums,” says Gordon.

“I enjoy painting British wildlife, although when I see something that catches my eye, I will paint it. From butterfly to elephant, landscape to seascape, nothing is too much of a challenge,” he added.

Gordon is one of a number of local artists promoted by the Council through Huyton Library and his exhibition there runs until 8th January 2002. Other budding artists are invited to contact Knowsley Arts Services at arts.unit.dlcs@knowsley.gov.uk or on 0151 443 5617 or click here to visit the website.
