Flags Flying for Knowsleys Parks |
Knowsley swept the board at the recent Green Flag awards taking an unprecedented six awards. The Green Flag Park Award Scheme, a Civic Trust scheme, was launched in 1996 to recognise and encourage good quality public parks. The Green Flag indicates that each park has been judged to be of very high quality. Three existing award winning parks, Halewood Park, Saw Pit Park, Huyton and St Chads Park, Kirkby, were re-accredited with Green Flags, while three more of Knowsley's green spaces were awarded with this prestigious accolade. This year, McGoldrick Park in Huyton, Acornfield Plantation in Kirkby and St John's Millennium Green in Huyton received the award for the first time. St Johns is yet another Knowsley first, being the first Millennium Green, of over 400 nation-wide, to be awarded the Green Flag. With a total of six, Knowsley now has more green flags than any other council in the country. Sally Keeble, Regeneration Minister, praised the work that has been done in the borough saying: There are examples of excellence and innovation spread right across the country. Just up the road we have St Johns Millenniumm Green. This was established by a charitable trust in partnership with Knowsley Council and includes an innovative dateline illustrating local histroy. The managers deserve great praise for gaining Green Flag status. Knowsley also hosted the national awards this year with an impressive ceremony at the Huyton Suite. Cllr Graham Morgan, Knowsleys Cabinet Member for Leisure commented: This is a very important award for the green spaces in the borough and for KMBC, we are now the leading authority for green space in the UK.
