School’s Commission - Shaping the future of schools in Knowsley (14)

After a year of visits and consultations, the Knowsley Schools’ Commission recently published its final report. The commission was set up by Knowsley Council to look at ways in which schools in the borough can be improved to meet the demands of the 21st century.

The proposals set out in the report are, at this stage, recommendations only. It is now up to Knowsley Council to decide on its own proposals on the future of the schools in the area.

In addition to the proposals outlined opposite, the Commission has also made a number of recommendations for all schools. These include the need for a long-term programme of modifications and modernisation of school buildings, and a reassessment of the way in which schools can and are being used by the whole community.

Knowsley is now asking local people to put forward their thoughts on these proposals. For more information about the report and how you can have your say in the future of school provision on Huyton, write to: The Department of Education and Lifelong Learning, KMBC, Huyton Hey Road, Huyton, L36 5YH.

Primary Schools
Overall, the Schools’ Commission has proposed the amalgamation of 23 primary schools across Knowsley to create 12 brand new purpose built schools. Some of these changes affect schools in the Huyton area. The proposals are:

  • The amalgamation of St Albert’s Catholic Primary and Nine Tree Community Primary School.
  • The amalgamation of St Dominic’s Infant and Junior Schools.
  • The amalgamation of Beechwood Community Primary and Brookside Community Primary Schools.
  • The amalgamation of St Gabriel’s CE Primary and St Agnes Catholic Primary into a joint-faith school.
  • St Aloysius Catholic Primary and Park View Primary to get extensive refurbishment.
  • Sylvester Community Primary School to be re-built on the current site.
  • St John Fisher, Knowsley Village Primary, Roby Park Primary, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary and St Aidan’s Catholic Primary school will face no immediate action but are to be monitored.

Secondary Schools
The Schools’ Commission has identified three options for consideration for Secondary Schools in the Huyton, Prescot, Whiston and Cronton areas. These proposals involve the closure of at least one of Huyton’s Secondary Schools and the building of a new Community School in the North Huyton area.
