It’s All In The Spoken Word

Knowsley will soon be ringing to the sounds of French, Spanish and German now that a joint bid with Liverpool to develop foreign languages in primary schools has been successful.

Only 19 councils across the country have been nominated to lead the way in language learning for seven to 11 year olds. This is seen as a major step forward and will ensure youngsters have the opportunity to learn another language when they are most receptive.

One of Knowsley’s secondary schools, Prescot School, is already a specialist language college and will be sharing its knowledge with primary schools in Knowsley.

Lynne Heath, Headteacher at Prescot School, said, “This is a real opportunity to develop our children at an early age to be better prepared for the demands of the modern world. It also has particular benefits now Liverpool will be capital of culture in 2008 and gives youngsters a real advantage in learning a language when they are at a most receptive age.”
