Beauty by the Book

By Danielle Ventre and Huyton Youth Project

Huyton Girls Youth Project was set up in January 1999, with a view to getting girls together from different areas of Huyton.

It began with weekly meetings to find out about each other and what interests we all have. The following two months were spent ice-skating, bowling and getting to know each other. A trip to Aviemore in Scotland followed. Eight girls in total went on this trip, with activities including horse-riding, ice-skating and quad biking to name but a few.

Since the trip to Scotland the group has increased to fifteen. Following group discussions, various courses in Roby College were suggested, but the one that caught everyone's eye was the Beauty, Hair and Self-Image course. We thought not only would it be good to learn about hair and make-up but we could have a laugh while doing it!

The course is accredited by Merseyside Open College Network. We have been given the unique opportunity by Peter Nolan and Helen Treadall, of the Detached Youthwork Team, to undertake the course whilst still at school which will give us a head start in that chosen profession.

We attend this course every Wednesday evening from 5.30pm-8.00pm. It will run for 12 weeks.

When the course has finished we all hope to gain a MOCN credit award which you can use to support progression to any of the thousands of other MOCN accredited programmes across the UK, or to transfer credits already achieved to similar programmes.

I would like to thank youth workers Peter Nolan and Helen Treadall, on behalf of the group, for their guidance and support.
