Growing Confidence in Huyton

IT seems that almost everywhere you look in Huyton these days there are new shops or houses being built. These developments bring not only much needed new employment, but reflect a growing confidence in Huyton as a place to live and work. Huyton Today brings you details of two of the latest exciting retail developments.

LIDL
German supermarket chain Lidl are the first new store to open on the East Prescot Road/Princess Drive junction. Lidl opened their first UK store in 1995 and now have over 200 stores nationwide. Although they are based mainly in the south east, the Huyton store is one of a growing number throughout the North West, with a new distribution centre planned for Runcorn.

Business has been steady at the new store since it opened in October.

Work on two other stores on the site is nearing completion.

ASDA
Retail giants ASDA recently announced plans to build a new £2.5m superstore on Lathom Road, Huyton. It will be the largest retail development project in Huyton for over two decades, securing 290 jobs and creating a further 250.

This is the first new development to be announced by ASDA since their take-over by US retailers Wal-Mart.

The proposals will extend the town centre onto undeveloped land at Lathom Road, but does not include properties fronting Huyton Lane.

Ian Brearly, Regional Property Manager for ASDA said, “ASDA is delighted to be working in partnership with Knowsley Council to bring this brand new store to Huyton. The new store will have a larger sales area than the existing store, enabling us to offer customers a full range of ASDA goods within a spacious and comfortable shopping environment.”

The news from ASDA follows the recent extensive, £2.5m programme of environmental improvements across the town centre aimed at making Huyton a more pleasant place to shop and work whilst stimulating the economic climate. This new redevelopment from ASDA complements other multi-million pound investments such as the Merseytravel Bus Station, the new Huyton Library and One Stop Shop.

Cllr Ron Round, Chair of Knowsley’s Economic Development and Planning Committee said, “This announcement provides the ideal platform from which to strengthen the economic viability of Huyton Village. ASDA has proved a central player in the Huyton Village retail regeneration programme and we are pleased with the news of their further commitment, which will boost employment opportunities for local people.”
