Learning for Life

Lifelong Learning is part of a new government initiative aimed at increasing the number of adults returning to education and training. With attainment levels in Knowsley currently much lower than the national average, the Education Authority is facing a huge challenge.

Lifelong Learning Co-ordinator for Knowsley is Paul Lally, who told Huyton Today that the important thing about the new initiative is to involve as many people as possible in the education process. “It’s all about partnerships,” he said. “We need to bring together the major providers of post-16 education for the benefit of Knowsley residents.”

One of the organisations already working with Knowsley to provide training is the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA).

The WEA is the largest voluntary sector provider of further education in the UK. As part of the government’s new Lifelong Learning initiative, the WEA, in partnership with Knowsley Education Department, set up a pilot scheme last year in Huyton. During the year over 200 people took advantage of the wide range of courses on offer. These included Computers, Drama, Aromatherapy, Liverpool History, Toy Making, Managing Stress, Spanish, Gardening, and much more.

Enrolment for new courses is on 18th - 20th January at Bowring School. Although based at the school, the WEA can arrange courses at other locations in the area.
