Weekend Events at Knowsley Festival

 

The finest weather of the year brought out crowds for the launch of Knowsley’s Millennium Cultural Festival with over 2000 people gathering at Higherside Community Comprehensive School for the Whiston Millennium Summer Show.

With entertainment throughout the day in the main arena, coupled with a talent competition, line dancing, craft fair, assault course and sports activities, the event was a huge success. It was opened by Knowsley’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Tommy Russell and several town mayors took part in the street procession to the sounds of a concertina band and Morris dancers.

Millennium 10k Race

The Millennium 10k race, an annual event in Knowsley, saw over 120 runners braving the sweltering temperatures on the 18th of June to compete for this coveted title at Halewood Park.

Patrick Cousins from Liverpool claimed first past the post with a time of 38 mins 51 secs. 76 year old Geoff Perkins came in 63rd position in under an hour. The first female to cross the winning line was Lorraine Reynolds. The event was sponsored by Barclaycard.

The festival ‘free draw’ for two tickets to ‘New York’ courtesy of Continental Airlines was won by Doug Hibbs from Halewood - LUCKY DOUG!!!

The 10k Millennium Run on Sunday 18th June was won by Lorraine Reynolds of the Liverpool Harriers(above) and Patrick Cousins from the Liverpool Road Runners (below)

 

An Athletics Competition on Tuesday 20th June saw all of the Knowsley High Schools represented.
‘Come and Try’ sports sessions included Archery, Martial Arts and Sub Aqua activities

While thousands of people attended the Local Gala days - Bowring Park, Henley Park Centre, St Dominic’s and Stockbridge, others were entertained by street entertainers as they shopped in Halewood, Prescot, Kirkby and Huyton.

The Knowsley ‘Fun’ Swimming Gala at Kirkby Pool (above) ended the festival, with over 500 people in the pool complex watching six teams taking part in an exciting event attended by the Mayor and Mayoress and representatives from Continental Airlines. The winners of the Continental Airlines Trophy were Ormskirk Swimming Club (below).
