This term sees the departure of another well-known figure from Huyton schools.

Tony Halpen is retiring after 19 years as headteacher at the Sylvester Primary School. Following a career encompassing the Wirral, Huyton and Whiston he has finally decided to take a well-earned rest from the demands of teaching. He takes with him memories of “working with lovely people and smashing kids” and will miss them a great deal.

Tony is proud of his school’s fine reputation, and attributes much to “teachers and children working hard and thoughtfully”, and believes Sylvester pupils to be as clever and capable as children anywhere.

Huyton Today is sure that he will be missed by many youngsters and their families. The final words go to Tony who told us, “I am just as proud of the way our children turn out to be independent and pleasant people as I am of their examination results.”

We wish him luck for the future.
