World Book Day at St Aloysius

Different But The Same, the name given to a two week celebration of cultural diversity at St Aloysius RC Primary School. Between 11th - 22nd March, pupils and staff at the school were involved in a wide ranging selection of activities aimed at raising the pupils’ awareness of gender, stereotyping, disability and cultural issues facing children and adults today.

Visitors to the school included students from King David College in Liverpool who talked to year 5 pupils about Judaism, an African Dance Workshop, Gospel singers, representatives of disabled groups, a resident artist (Faith Bebbington) and a number of guest storytellers.

Headteacher, Mrs Belinda Basnett, told Huyton Today, “It has been a fantastic experience for everyone. The children have had the opportunity to meet people from many different cultures and backgrounds. It has brought our multi-cultural society very much to life. They have had the opportunity to explore subjects that they normally only read about in text books.”

A Jolly Good Read

All of these activities did not get in the way of the school celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 14th March, when everyone dressed as a character from a favourite book or story.

Guest storytellers helped to reinforce the focus for the day, the idea that reading is fun. The day ended with a “World Book Day” parade when prizes of Book Tokens were given to the best costume in each year group.
