Beechwood pupils amd staff tuck into breakfast

Pupils at Beechwood Primary School in Huyton are starting the day on a positive note since staff at the school set up the Breakfast Club. Every day between 30 and 40 children come to school early to enjoy toast, cereal, hot and cold drinks and play board games.

Headteacher, Christine Taylor, is working hard to make the school the centre of the community, “The club is just a part of our work, making the school a happy place to be and this is proving to be a success. The children enjoy coming to the club; it is lively and has a good atmosphere,” she said.

Although the Breakfast Club started just a few weeks ago, already it has had a positive impact on attendance and punctuality. It has helped raise the pupils' perceptions of the school to such a degree that it has begun to feature in their school work, with one of the children writing a letter of thanks to the school’s Site Manager, Mike Fisher, one of the pivotal members of staff involved in the scheme. The club also has help from General Teaching Assistant, Theresa Freeman and a parent, Julie Fisher.

There are benefits for parents too, as Theresa Freeman points out: “The club has enabled some parents to get back into employment by offering professional care for their children in the morning. After school care is also available at Beechwood Educare.”
