Neptune Settles into New Home

A stunning sculpture of Neptune, the lord of the sea, is settling into his new home and already has waves of adoring fans. The sculpture, made from willow, was created by renowned artists Alexander James and Simon Armstrong and was until recently, on display in Kirkby Gallery. However, a more permanent home was needed and primary head Sheila Walmsley immediately volunteered the garden of her school Blackrow Brow in Huyton. We have a garden with a fish and water theme and I felt that Neptune would be perfect here. He is settling in and the children think he is absolutely marvellous, she said. Neptune was created as part of a unique community art project that took place at the Kirkby Gallery during the summer. The artists worked with community groups to create the sculpture including the imaginary ebb and flow of tidal waves with small objects such as shells and seaweed, positioned around as if left by a receding tide. |
